Once a jumble of abandoned buildings, squatted warehouses, and a center for juvenile delinquents, the Oosterdok (Eastern Dock) region of Amsterdam along the River Ij, with several man-made islands and peninsulas, is now a flourishing community, featuring luxury housing, chic design shops, and some of the city's best modern architecture. For the next few years, the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art wil be housed there, presenting exhibitions in a former post office while the original building undergoes extensive renovations. Now the region heralds Holland's newest cultural center, the award-winning, $71 million contemporary music hall designed by Danish architects 3xNielsen.
On June 15, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands officially opened the 140,000-square-foot facility, a sleek, glass-enclosed structure which bears the unfortunate generic name of the Muziekgebouw (Music Building) - or officially, Muziekgebouw aan 'tIJ, which should keep it from being confused with Cees Dam's 1986 Muziektheater or Adolf Leonard van Gend's 1888 Concertgebouw (Concert Building),often said to boast the best acoustics in the world.
